Pioneered by Moog Music and Buchla in the 1960's, the modular synthesizer offers an alternative to "classic" synthesizers. Instead of following the predefined signal flow decided by the manufacturer, the modular synthesizer allows the musician to route audio and control voltages (CV) as he wishes thanks to modular patch points and patch cables. Also, the composition of the modular synthesizer is up to the user : thanks to the eurorack format, standardized in 1996, anyone can "build" a modular synthesizer by assembling modules, depending on their functionnality (oscillator, filter, envelope, utility) and size, measured in HPs and Us.
