The Inspiration:

• In 1973, the GX-1 was released, a groundbreaking polyphonic synthesizer with four ranks of incredible sound, velocity and aftertouch sensitivity.
• Due to its limited production and high cost, only a handful survive today. Notable users include Keith Emerson, Stevie Wonder, ABBA, and John Paul Jones.
• Four years later, the more affordable and programmable CS-80 arrived. While outwardly different, the CS-80 shared the GX-1's core architecture and expressive real-time control capabilities.
• It was embraced by music legends like Paul McCartney, Eddie Jobson, Michael Jackson, Peter Gabriel, Hans Zimmer, and Vangelis, who famously used it in "Blade Runner."

Under the Hood:

• Both instruments featured "ranks," each containing an oscillator, filters, noise generator, sine wave oscillator, envelope generators, and a VCA.
• The CS-80 had two ranks, each with 8 polyphonic voices for a total of 16.
• The GX-1 had four 8-voice ranks, a solo synth voice for its mini keyboard, and another for the pedalboard.
• Unlike the CS-80, the GX-1 was a preset instrument with no onboard controls. Programming required an external hardware programmer.
• However, the GX-1 offered unique features like a highpassed resonant pulse wave, bandpassed sawtooth wave, octave-up triangle wave, and filter envelope inversion.
