The Lifeforms SV-2 is a powerful semi-modular analog synthesizer that combines classic East Coast synthesis with an expanded architecture built for experimentation. Featuring redesigned oscillators, character-rich filters, extensive analog overdrive, flexible modulation, spring reverb, and a fully patchable architecture, the SV-2 offers everything from warm vintage tones to complex, aggressive textures.
At its core are two Thru-Zero Triangle Core oscillators, each offering Pulse Symmetry, Blade, Sine, Triangle, Saw, and Random waveforms, along with Thru-Zero FM, Phase Modulation, Linear FM, Hard Sync, and On Demand Tuning. Two additional voltage-controlled LFOs can operate at audio rates, effectively giving the SV-2 up to four oscillators for massive sounds. A dedicated sub-oscillator and analog white noise generator further expand the palette.
The Pittsburgh Filter is a dual state-variable multimode filter with Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, Combo, and Random responses. Its unique Warped and Warped & Rectified Character modes reshape waveforms in unusual ways, while integrated variable overdrive adds everything from subtle saturation to aggressive harmonic distortion.
Overdrive is built throughout the signal path, with six independent saturation and overdrive stages. These include saturation in the dual mixer, a variable preamp, two pre-filter overdrives, and saturation in the spring reverb, allowing the SV-2 to move from smooth analog warmth to heavily distorted and industrial sounds.
The SV-2 also includes a wide range of synthesis and performance tools:
- Monophonic, one-button paraphonic, and patchable full-duophonic operation
- Complex arpeggiator with multiple modes, octave options, and randomization
- Two ADSR envelope generators with multiple response curves and range modes
- Two independent VCAs
- Dual mixer with saturation and flexible routing
- Sample & Hold with analog white noise
- 2-channel audio/CV mixer and signal splitter
- Spring reverb with tonal tilt EQ, controlled feedback, self-oscillation, and saturation
- Digital modulation tool with clock-synced LFO, decay envelope, and random controls
- Custom 37-key keyboard with pitch and modulation wheels
For deeper experimentation, the SV-2 features an 84-point patch bay and a 24HP Eurorack expansion bay with three power headers, allowing Eurorack modules to be integrated directly into different points of the synthesizer's signal path. The internal signal path means it can be used immediately without patching, while the open architecture provides extensive room for sound design when you want to go further.
