What’s a Mix Engine Effect?
Unlike traditional VSTs and effects that affect only one channel or bus at a time, activating Mix Engine FX in Studio One—including the Main bus—automatically impacts and cross-processes all channels feeding that bus. This lateral cross-processing, combined with PreSonus’ proprietary State-Space Modeling technology, allows for incredibly natural, nuanced, and authentic-sounding digital models of revered analog equipment, capturing behaviors like drive, crosstalk, noise, saturation, and even tape speed.
What is State-Space Modeling?
State-Space Modeling technology enables us to create digital models of analog circuit behavior at the component level, allowing us to model specific non-linearities within these components. This results in realistic digital representations of analog circuit behavior, particularly for transformers and vacuum tubes. Consequently, our Mix Engine FX effectively capture the character and personality of legendary analog hardware that would otherwise be out of reach for many musicians, producers, and engineers.
Alpine Desk
Infuse your mixes with punchy low end and the smooth warmth of a legendary American recording console. Alpine Desk enhances any mix with the State-Space Modeled tonality reminiscent of classic albums from the 70s, 80s, and beyond.
Unique to Alpine Desk is a variable output transformer, allowing you to switch between a 1:1 and 3:1 gain ratio for higher drive settings and a uniquely dark and warm tonal contour. The two-stage Boost control enables you to dial in subtle tone colorations or achieve serious overdrive, previously impossible on the original hardware.
Brit Console
Enhance your mixes with the distinct character of two of the most iconic British consoles from the 80s. Brit Console transforms any mix with the State-Space Modeled tonality that propelled countless Top 40 hits.
Brit Console features emulations of two classic consoles and offers three style options: Vintage, Super, and Modern. Vintage provides a bit of top-end roll-off for a smoother character, while Super caters to those seeking an ultra-clean sound. The Modern setting grants access to the Harmonics control.
In Modern mode, the variable harmonic distortion offers a gentle bass boost. Modeled after a celebrated preamp design, the Harmonics control allows for everything from nuanced second and third-order harmonic saturation to edgy transistor bite. Like Alpine Desk, the two-stage Boost control provides an extensive palette of tonal color and drive for your mix.
Porta Cassette
Porta Cassette faithfully captures the smooth, analog, slightly off-kilter lo-fi essence of 80s and 90s four-track cassette recorders. It enables you to create mixes reminiscent of everything from YouTube’s lofi hip hop beats to Springsteen’s Nebraska.
With Character and Pitch controls, you can manipulate tone coloration and introduce tape wow and flutter effects for semi-randomized detuning, mimicking the sound of a worn-out tape motor. We’ve even modeled the hum generated by the power supply using State-Space technology.
