Royer Labs SF-12 Dual-Element Stereo Ribbon Microphone
The Royer Labs SF-12 is a passive, dual-element stereo ribbon microphone designed to deliver Royer’s signature ribbon sound in a single, coincident stereo package. Built around two ultra-thin 1.8-micron aluminum ribbon transducers, the SF-12 captures detailed, natural stereo recordings with exceptional realism, depth, and phase coherence.
The two ribbon elements are mounted one above the other in a fixed 45-degree coincident Blumlein configuration, allowing the SF-12 to produce accurate stereo imaging with vivid spatial detail and transparent audio fidelity. This design makes the SF-12 ideal for both Blumlein and Mid-Side (M-S) recording techniques without the complexity of multi-mic setups.
As a passive ribbon microphone, the SF-12 features no active electronics, resulting in an exceptionally low noise floor and pristine signal integrity. Its figure-8 polar pattern and ribbon transducer design provide excellent off-axis rejection and natural room capture, making it especially well-suited for orchestras, ensembles, ambience, choirs, and acoustic performances.
With high SPL handling up to 130 dB, the SF-12 can be confidently placed in front of loud sound sources without distortion, while retaining the smooth transient response and natural tonality ribbon microphones are known for. Engineers often choose the SF-12 as a reliable, single-point stereo solution when accuracy, consistency, and phase alignment are critical.
The SF-12 uses a 5-pin XLR output and includes an 18-foot splitter cable terminating in dual standard XLR connectors, making integration with professional recording systems straightforward. Each microphone is supplied with a protective wood case and backed by Royer’s long-term warranty coverage.
