Royer Labs SF-24 Stereo Ribbon Microphone
The Royer Labs SF-24 is a phantom-powered stereo ribbon microphone designed for accurate, phase-coherent stereo recording in a single housing. Based on the acclaimed SF-12, the SF-24 combines Royer’s ribbon transducer design with active electronics, delivering condenser-like output levels while preserving the natural, detailed sound ribbons are known for.
Housed in one body are two matched ribbon elements arranged in a coincident Blumlein configuration, with each figure-8 element angled 45° from center. This design produces an exceptionally stable stereo image, precise transient response, and excellent mono compatibility. Off-axis coloration is minimal, and frequency response remains consistent across varying distances and angles.
The SF-24’s active circuitry increases sensitivity by approximately 14 dB compared to passive ribbon microphones, resulting in an output level of -38 dB. Ultra-low-noise FET electronics keep self-noise below 18 dB, allowing the microphone to pair easily with virtually any professional preamp. Integrated impedance-matching electronics ensure the ribbon elements always see an optimal load, protecting performance and preventing tonal loss.
With high SPL handling up to 130 dB, low magnetic leakage, and resistance to heat, humidity, phantom power, and cabling faults, the SF-24 is suitable for demanding studio and location recording. It excels on orchestras, choirs, acoustic piano, drum overheads, room ambience, and ensemble recording, where realism and spatial accuracy are essential.
