Royer Labs SF-24V Vacuum Tube Stereo Ribbon Microphone
Finished in satin nickel, the Royer Labs SF-24V is a true stereo ribbon microphone that combines classic ribbon performance with the harmonic richness of vacuum-tube electronics. Its tube-driven design delivers a smooth, detailed midrange and open, articulate high frequencies, producing a sense of air and depth rarely associated with ribbon microphones.
Designed for true stereo capture, the SF-24V houses two ribbon capsules in a coincident configuration, positioned one above the other and angled 45° from center. This arrangement creates a classic Blumlein stereo field, offering exceptional stereo imaging, precise transient response, and outstanding phase coherence. The microphone maintains a uniform, largely flat frequency response across varying distances, with minimal off-axis coloration.
With an output level of -38 dB and self-noise below 18 dB, the SF-24V is compatible with virtually any professional microphone preamp, making it well suited for classical, acoustic, and naturalistic recording environments. Each capsule is driven by its own triode-connected, military-grade 5840 vacuum tube, providing high output and consistent impedance matching.
Triode-configured cathode follower circuitry allows the SF-24V to operate over long cable runs without loss of clarity or high-frequency detail. A dedicated external power supply supports stable operation, while fully balanced outputs are electrically isolated via Jensen output transformers for optimal signal integrity.
Compared to passive ribbon microphones, the SF-24V offers higher output, improved impedance matching, and greater operational safety. Its excellent phase compatibility ensures stereo recordings can be summed to mono without phase artifacts, and each capsule may also be used independently for mono recording.
The SF-24V is ideally suited for capturing orchestras, choirs, chamber ensembles, acoustic piano, drum overheads, and other detailed acoustic sources where realism and depth are essential.
